Call-to-Artists – Beyond the Gallery

Urban Public Art & Design - Beyond the Gallery

Art practices that exist outside of the confines of the gallery have a long history that include genres such as land art, eco-art, public art, and social practice art. This short listing, though far from complete, is meant to provide a platform for understanding the scope of creativity outside the boundaries of white cubic space.

The aim of this call-to-artists is to exhibit Urban Public Artworks that fulfills its traditional role while pushing the envelope of social space, and even technology, to actualize itself in harmony with the urban and natural environment. In doing so we would like to provide examples of Urban Public Art that can inspire people. These can be completed projects for which you have visual and written documentation, or they can be models or maquettes for a project yet to be realized.

“My dream project idea was not selected for implementation, can I submit that?”

Yes, we want to see your dream project idea, or public art submission was not chosen, we are especially interested in seeing it.

These projects can take many forms. We are thinking about Urban Public Artworks that provide energy, sustainable gardens, realistic transportation solutions, and outdoor multipurpose venues, large scale, or just some small feature. It is up to you, the artist, to submit your ideas, projects, or plans. We are open to whatever you have to offer.

Urban art and design projects are supported in the public realm with creativity, inspiration, and financial support. When urban communal spaces become more humanized they grow culturally and economically, inspiring the various populations that use those spaces in many exciting ways. This is what we are looking for, creativity and inspiration, notions that can be realized, actualized, and carried forward into the future of S. Florida.

This call-to-artists seeks out projects, realized or experimental, that play with those notions.

Art Naples Presents: Miami Wave

Art Naples is proud to present the exhibition “Miami Wave,” curated by Miami artist Sergio Garcia. Miami has since been promoted within Spanish and Latin American culture by means of a steady program of art exhibits, literature, film, theater, music and the humanities. It has evolved in tandem with demographic changes and the ever-growing cultural dynamism of Miami.

“During the these four days, the Art Naples will become a meeting point for participation and exchange. In support of Art Naples mission to highlight the dynamic world of the art and culture from Miami, I have enlisted 12 galleries with 16 artists to exhibit,” notes Mr. Garcia. For the first time in the art fair industry there will be a “live” web cam Art Talk titled, ”Are We on the Same Wave?” This will be a “live broadcast” Naples-to-Miami and back with a meeting of the minds with those tailoring the making of Miami’s 1st Biennale to be scheduled in 2012.

The “Art Talk” moderator in Naples will be led by Miami Biennale’s chief director, Jorge Gutierrez. In Miami at the Biennale’s headquarters, the 25,000 sq.ft Dorissa building in Wynwood, the Art Talk will be led by Miami Biennale’s founder, Milagros Maldonado, and its director, Ariana Testamarck Orellana.

Sergio Garcia presents a wave of work that has been brought about through a dialogue among the arts with a pre- selection of the “Best Of Miami” contemporary art. This show, as the curator says, “is only the tip of the ice-berg.” From painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, objects, and installation, this show will captivate us with its beauty and outstanding quality.

Participating artists: Edouard Duval-Carrie, Angel Vapor, Andres Michelena, Ciro Quintana, Alejandro Mendoza, Phillip Ross Munro, Lillim Cuenca, Onajide Shabaka, Octavio Cuellar, Antonio Alonso, Mariano Costa Peuser, Jose “Tonito” Rodriguez, Luis Delgado, John La Huis, Sergio Garcia, Andres Ferrandi, Maria Font.

Art Collective Salutes Kwanzaa Principles

Originally posted in South Florida Times

Artists in the Kuumba Artists Collective of South Florida are staging their annual salute to the seven principles of Kwanzaa with an exhibition in the ArtLab33 studio in the Miami neighborhood of Wynwood.

“Putting an exhibit together in the spirit of all of the traditional African community values is our way to celebrate the seven principles,” Dinizulu Gene Tinnie, the collective’s founding member, said.

“It’s also a way to introduce young people to the arts, teach them about the principles [and] let them know that there is art that celebrates who we are,” Tinnie said.

The collective, named for one of the principles of Kwanzaa signifying creativity, hosted the opening reception for its Kuumba Kwanzaa Art Exhibition on Dec. 22. It will run until Jan. 1, the last day of Kwanzaa.

The exhibit features the diverse, original works of 16 photographers, draftsmen and sculptors.

It includes pieces from members of the collective that were exhibited during the time of Art Basel 2010, according to Altiné, the exhibition organizer.

“We kept the Basel exhibition up, added a few pieces and then turned it into the Kwanzaa exhibit,” Altiné said.

Among the works being exhibited by Miami artist Robert McKnight is a tile and concrete sculpture titled Mockingbird.

“Everybody paints and draws but I like to do something different with my artwork,” said McKnight, whose studio is in Miami’s historic Bakehouse Art Complex.

The lapis-colored tiles used in the piece, he said, were leftovers from a mosaic mural.

McKnight primarily works in 3D, using wood collages to build relief forms exploiting shadows and light. Instead of working with wood, McKnight said, he uses a collage approach, allowing the patterns to self-complete.

“This way, the piece is more chaotic, spontaneous and non-objective,” he explained.

Between 1993 and 1998, Miami Lakes photographer James A. Rush captured historic outdoor murals painted by the late Miami artist Oscar Thomas. One piece is titled Prince of Peace.

“The photo was taken before the mural’s renovation,” said Rush, who developed an interest in photography at age 6.

The 10-foot-by-12-foot Prince of Peace mural featuring a montage of portraits of the slain human rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and a quotation in script from his last speech, has graced the corner of Northwest Seventh Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard since 1994.

Rush’s 16-by-20-inch framed photo capturing the black-and-white mural in its original state was photographed shortly after its completion. The mural’s line form, texture and light are well preserved in the picture.

Thomas, who died in 1997 at age 41, is remembered for his social consciousness, the pride he had in his cultural heritage, the history reflected in his paintings and the murals he painted on buildings around Overtown, Liberty City and Opa-locka.

Each year the Kuumba Artists Collective honors Thomas’ work through an Oscar Thomas Memorial People’s Art Exhibition in Liberty City.

Onajide Shabaka, owner of ArtLab33 described the Kwanzaa exhibit as “a valiant effort.”

“An artist becoming part of the art conversation in Miami is a great experience,” Shabaka said. “I was happy to offer the space.”

Using a fully engage working process, Onajide Shabaka’s various drawings use somewhat violent techniques in their creation by burning, erasing, rubbing, and smoking his surfaces. Not only are their emotional content highly charged, the creative process it brought about through a fully charged engagement with both the subject and medium. The burning and smoking of the drawing, though not destroying the paper’s surface, it creates a texture that mutes and highlights the line drawings, both at the same time leaving it with a translucence and aura.

New and Recents Works from Kuumba Artist Collective

As Art Basel Miami Beach, which annually transforms Miami and Miami Beach into a global Mecca for visual art for a few heady days in early December, Kuumba Artist Collective will be marked by an unprecedented presence of African world art (from the Diaspora and the Motherland). This “visual jazz concert” of paintings, drawings, sculptures and other works featuring several local artists takes place in Miami’s Wynwood Art District, at Artlab33 | Art Space, 2085-B NW 2nd Avenue. The exhibition is open from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. during Art Basel Miami Beach, and will continue throughout the month of December, during December 11th gallery walk and by appointment.

Scissors & Glue – The Miami Project

Zuckerfilm Productions is proud to present the trailer for its new documentary film, Scissors and Glue: The Miami Project. The film is an intimate look at a young city with an old soul. This documentary examines the way in which artistic expression and exhibition relates to and also influences community development. Scissors and Glue: The Miami Project dares to ask, ”Which is more powerful, culture’s influence on art or art’s influence on culture?”

Scissors and Glue: The Miami Project follows Helmut Schuster on his journey from gallery owner in Berlin to the founding of his new Gallery Schuster in Miami’s Wynwood district. Drawing inspiration from Miami’s recent art renaissance, this film uses his experiences to illustrate the international draw of the city’s art scene. Scissors and Glue: The Miami Project features discussions with many of Miami’s art community members including: Bonnie Clearwater (MOCA), Rosa De La Cruz, Thea Goldman, David Lombardi, Thomas Collins (MAM), Jason Rubell (The Rubell Family Collection), Terry Riley, Dennis Scholl (The Knight Foundation & World Class Boxing), Silvia Karman Cubiñá (Bass Museum), Katherine Hinds (The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse), Constance Margulies (The Lotus House), Craig Robins, Fred Snitzer, and many more. This documentary addresses the role and responsibility of art in urban society, while highlighting the unique nature of Miami’s people and their relationship to the arts.
